This feature can be useful when you want to create hundreds of variations of documents like envelopes, mailing labels, and letters very quickly. You can merge various forms of data including CSV files or TXT files with InDesign documents. The panel already has conditions created and applied to various text items in the layout. Merging a data file with InDesign lets you create multiple variations of the same document. This should prompt a dropdown menu from which you should select “From file” and then “From folder. Choose Window > Type and Tables > Conditional Text to open the panel. Select the text to which you want to apply the condition. Then choose New Condition from the Conditional Text panel menu, and type a name for the condition.

You create a template in a normal document, with rules that tell it how to format your text. To import image directories in excel, go to the data tab at the top of the page and press the “Get Data” button. If you do intend on importing image data into excel, I would recommend doing it before adding any other information as images are always imported in alphabetical order. Obviously though, this will vary depending on where the files are saved.

If your image files are stored in such a way that this isn’t possible, then you can put the full directory which would likely look something like Add the image placeholder to the frame by simply clicking the frame and then clicking the data field title. That way, simply putting the file name and extension will find the correct file (john-smith.jpg).
